DIY Christmas Decor

Decorating for Christmas is one of my favorite activities of the year - we get to bring out all the pretty decorations, and I even make a few of my own. This year, I wanted to incorporate the pink that we have throughout our house (in furniture and other decor) in some of our Christmas decorations, and we didn’t have anything that matched quite right. I found some adorable decor on Anthropologie (one of my faves) but I couldn’t justify spending that much money on something I wasn’t sure that I would use long-term. (Pink decor may eventually go out of style, you know) So, instead of purchasing the very adorable Anthropologie decorations that I loved, I did a little DIY touch ups to a few things I found in stores. It was quite simple and you can do it too!

FELT WOOL BALLS

Most of our DIY decor this year was touched by felt wool balls - adding a fun whimsical look - which we actually had many of already, but you can find them on Etsy, Amazon, and even Walmart.com!

POM POM WREATH

This pom pom wreath wreath I found at Target and I loved the pom poms but thought it was a tad plain. When I got home, I got out our colored felt wool balls that I wanted and some hot glue and added a little bit of color to transform this plain wreath into a fun whimsical Christmas wreath! We hung it inside our home on one of our doors, as to not ruin it in bad weather outdoors.

POM POM TREE CENTERPIECE

Similar to the Pom Pom Wreath above, I thought would be an ADORABLE table centerpiece, but I didn’t love the childish plush gold fabric star on the top. It didn’t look as sophisticated as I wanted for our table, so when I got home, we cut the star off the top and replaced it with three felt wool balls. I thought it turned out very nicely and pulled the colors of the table all together quite well! To give it some height, I actually placed it on top of a Pottery Barn mercury glass candle holder that I already had (and it fit just right)!

JOY TO THE WORLD WOOD SIGN

I love this piece of decor and actually picked it up at Michaels last year! They do still have it in stock if you are interested in getting it (and it is currently under $10!). I really loved the simplicity of how it looked, and last year, we put it in a place that it didn’t need any additional touches of color, but this year, we put it on our front entryway table (which is all white) so it needed a little color.

For this sign, we didn’t want to permanently change it, as we love the sign itself, so we strung red, white and green pom pom balls onto some white bakers twine and just laid the strand in front of the sign, adding a touch of color and bringing the entire table to life!

POM POM GARLAND

This is fairly self explanatory. I strung pom pom balls onto some white bakers twine with a thicker needle and made my own pom pom garland. You can purchase these at various different stores now too, but I wanted specific colors to match the rest of our decor. I hung it on our entryway hooks, as that wall was pretty empty and had no Christmas decor.

FELT BALL BOUQUET ACCENTS

I wanted to add a little more flair to our vases and bouquets, and I already had the vases and some of the stems, so I bought a set of frosted twig branches at Home Depot (any sticks or twigs thick enough would do), broke it all up to the lengths I wanted, and added these red and white balls to them. I used hot glue to secure them on the end of the twigs. I made the red sticks a little shorter to go with the bleached dried willow (as seen in the photo) and then the white sticks were longer for the ginger jar. Again, the goal was to tie all the decor in with the same look, and I thought this was a really nice touch!

OTHER LITTLE DETAILS

The last few pieces inside that I purchased this year were from Target - and I thought they were nice additions to what we already had/had made this year.

This first one, a wall hanging, had just the right colors and look we were going for.

We also put three unique ornament balls in a tray we already had and it spruced up the area without much effort. The ones we chose were two medium sized fabric off-white and gold balls, and one larger ball covered in a bristled frosting. Any large ornament balls would look great in any tray for a low-effort, highly-festive piece.

THE FINAL TOUCHES

With all of those pieces of decor completed, we add our tree filled with personal ornaments we got on our travels over the years, and our stockings.

We always get a real tree and string the lights and decorations on it ourselves. The final touches on the tree include our tree topper - one that looks like it could have come right out of the German Markets, made of straw and red string - and the baby’s breath from our wedding bouquets scattered around on the branches. It often reminds me of my childhood home tree in Kansas - as my mothers tree is covered in similar ornaments (the german ones) and baby’s breath as well.

Because we do not have a mantle to hang our stockings from, my husband made a contraption to hang our stockings above the tv (as shown). He found a large branch outside, then we wrapped it with a faux greenery garland, and the attached thick twine on each side of the branch to hang it. He put two nails in the wall to hang it on, and then we hang our stockings with ribbons on the branch. I think it is quite lovely for what we have!

As I previously mentioned, decorating for Christmas is one of my favorite activities, and I just LOVE Christmastime. For me, it has such a warm feeling of happiness and joy and I look forward to it each and every year. As you’ve seen, it isn’t too difficult to make your own decor, and so I hope you enjoy adding on your own personal touches!!

Merry Christmas & Have a safe and healthy New Year!
